Iya Afin Ayobunmi Sosi Songode

 

Sosi Songode was born and raised in Los Angeles, California to a Louisiana family and raised by a mother, grandmother and 3 great aunts, to who she attributes her early spiritual awareness. 

 

She found her destiny lay in the practices and teachings of the traditional West African Fon/ Yoruba cultural/ Priesthood.  She has been practicing her culture for over 35 years and has been an initiated orisa/ vodun priestess since 1974.

 

Iya Songode is a priestess of Hevioso (Songo/ Yemonja), a para-psychologist, spiritual counselor, lecturer on the psychology of female power and specializes in rites of passage training for young girls and women, artist and also a published writer.  She is the author of Rites of passage: Psychology of Female Power and The Cult of Songo.

 

Her spiritual and traditional African art work can be seen in many homes and shrines all across the United States.  Her art work is also exhibited in museums, festivals and shows in the Sea Islands of South Carolina and in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where she resides.

 

Iya Songode is the wife of Chief Adenibe Ajamu, mother of one and grandmother of three.
