Word to the Wise:  Honoring our elders

Last month, on the 29th of February I had the pleasure of attending a financial seminar by Kenneth "the Wiz" Reeves'.
There was a underlying theme throughout the evening on the importance of honoring our elders not only after they
cross over to the spiritual world but also while they are still here on this earthly plane.  Reverand E. Osbourne was
honored with a lifetime achievement award presente by Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.  Commendations were
also given by his cousin, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, widow of the late Dr Martin Luther King Jr and long time associate
and friend, Representative John Lewis of Georgia. There was a recurring theme throughout about honoring our elders
and letting them know we appreciate them.

This program made me think about my own elder relatives.  The week before this event I went to North Carolina to
visit my family. My 93 year old great uncle was in the hospital and we were able to go sit and spend time with him. He
had difficulty feeding himself and I was able to feed him his lunch while I was there.  It is difficult to explain how good
it felt to me to do this small service for him. I am so happy that he feeling better now. I was so honored to be able to do
something for him even though small in comparison to the things he had done. He is such a blessing to our family, his
friends and community.

We must take time to honor our elders. It is their shoulders on which we now stand. It is so important that we show them
how much we love and appreciate them.
